23 May Fast Trek in Abruzzo – Rocca Calascio (…as seen on screen!)
There is a piece of Hollywood in the heart of Italy!
What could possibly have in common George Clooney, Sean Connery and some ’80s best movies with a little village in Abruzzo region?
The answer is a fortress. Once a castle. Yes! Because this abandoned place, called Rocca Calascio, has been the setting of some masterpieces such as “Le nom de la Rose”, “Ladyhawke” and “The American”.
Maybe because is far away from everything, so far that the inhabitants left the original medieval village at its slopes. Or because here it actually seems Scotland! Yes, one of the Highlands’ castle, ruined but still so majestic with its round defensive towers, protected by high walls and surrounding cliffs. And there’s more! The view from the top is amazing!
You can see till Gran Sasso mountain chaine.
To us is one of the best kept and beautiful ruin in central Italy. And is even perfect for a one-day trip in case you are looking for nature, poetry and hawks: a step back in Medievel Age and its magic!
Even new Calascio village, from where you’ll start the walk to the ruins, deserves a visit. A tipical tiny and so well preserved Italian “borgo”.
With its narrow roads, rock houses and their flower vases’ at the windowsills. These arduous villages are definitely Abruzzo best kept secret!
